Responsibilities

  • Oversee formulation, development, and implementation of divisional plans and maintenance procedures.
  • Provide engineering advice to the department on mechanical engineering functions to ensure the availability and reliability of locomotives, rolling stock, plant, and equipment.
  • Oversee the design and planning of locomotives, rolling stock, plant, and equipment projects.
  • Facilitate the development and approval of locomotives, rolling stock, plant, and equipment policies and standards.
  • Lead in the development of divisional maintenance and development programs for locomotives, rolling stock, plant, and equipment to meet requirements for train and marine operations.
  • Oversee the implementation of locomotives, rolling stock, plant, and equipment scheduled and unscheduled maintenance at workshops and depots as per the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) standards.
  • Oversee the implementation of remanufacture/rehabilitation projects for locomotives, rolling stock, plant, and equipment.
  • Oversee the management of locomotives, rolling stock workshop and depot activities to achieve desired maintenance and high productivity, to ensure tasks are done to the required OEM standards.
  • Responsible for mechanical engineering designs, drawings, and specifications revision for locomotives, rolling stock, plant, and equipment.
  • Review and approve any onboard equipment or structures to be installed or transported on locomotives and rolling stock to ensure rail safety is safeguarded.
  • Review and recommend new systems that enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the mechanical engineering function in carrying out locomotives and rolling stock and equipment development and maintenance.
  • Coordinate expeditious restoration of damaged equipment, plant, locomotives and rolling stock.
  • Participate in rail incident and accident investigations spearheaded by the safety team to identify the root cause and implement remedial actions to stop recurrence.
  • Oversee the preparation of technical and functional specifications requirements for tender documents to enable appropriate procurement of materials, locomotives, rolling stock, plant, and equipment.
  • Spearhead in conducting locomotive, rolling stock, plant, and equipment failure and trend analysis, engineering inspection and audit, material and component quality inspection and analysis to assist in divisional engineering decision making.
  • Review and guide on locomotive, rolling stock, plant, and equipment leases to ensure efficient and effective rail operations.
  • Oversee inspections of leased locomotives, rolling stock, plant, and equipment.
  • Oversee outsourced contractors and consultants for the development and maintenance of locomotives, rolling stock, plant, and equipment.
  • Lead in the development and manufacture of parts and materials for rolling stock, plant, and equipment maintenance
  • Oversee quality in the manufacturing of parts and materials.
  • Ensure compliance with the applicable legal, statutory, and regulatory requirements in undertaking locomotive, rolling stock, plant, and equipment maintenance and development.
  • Lead in keeping updated and relevant knowledge of modern locomotive, rolling stock maintenance techniques, maintenance equipment, production systems, and procedures.
  • Responsible for championing safe working conditions in the workshop and depots.
  • Responsible for capacity building (skills transfer, technology transfer and training) for all staff within the Mechanical Division.
  • Give input in curriculum development for railway technical courses.

Requirements for the job

For appointment to this position, a candidate must have:

  • A Master’s Degree in Mechanical/Mechatronic Engineering or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical/Mechatronic Engineering or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
  • Registered by the Engineers Board of Kenya as a professional Engineer.
  • Membership of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) as a Corporate Member.
  • Valid Annual Practicing License from the Engineers Board of Kenya.
  • Certificate in Project Management.
  • Certificate in Leadership Course for at least four (4) weeks from a recognized institution.
  • Have a minimum period of ten (10) years relevant work experience, five (5) of which should be in a senior management position.
