We are looking for a highly motivated and dedicated Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Assistant to join our team at Imexolutions Ltd, an Electrical Engineering firm

based in Kenya. This role plays a critical part in maintaining a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, and visitors. The OHS Assistant will

support the Health and Safety team in implementing safety programs, conducting risk assessments, and ensuring compliance with local safety regulations specific to the electrical engineering industry. This position requires someone with a strong

understanding of health and safety principles, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to promote a culture of safety in the workplace.

 

Responsibilities

Safety Program Support:

  • Assist in the implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of health and safety programs across the company, ensuring compliance with Kenyan safety regulations, the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), and international safety standards.
  • Help prepare and review safety policies, ensuring they are up-to-date and applicable to the electrical engineering environment.
  • Assist in conducting regular safety audits and inspections of work sites, including electrical installation and maintenance areas.

Risk Assessment and Management:

  • Support the identification and assessment of hazards associated with electrical engineering works, including exposure to electrical hazards, working at heights, and heavy machinery use.
  • Help prepare risk assessments for specific tasks and work environments and recommend control measures.
  • Assist in ensuring the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other safety protocols to mitigate identified risks.

Accident and Incident Reporting:

  • Assist in the investigation of workplace accidents, injuries, and near-misses, documenting the circumstances, causes, and corrective actions.
  • Ensure that all incidents are reported to the relevant authorities, such as the Directorate of Occupational Health and Safety Services (DOHSS) in Kenya, in compliance with local regulations.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of accidents and incidents for internal reporting and audits.

Safety Training and Awareness:

  • Support the coordination of safety training programs for employees and contractors, including induction training for new hires, safety procedures for electrical work, and emergency response protocols.
  • Assist in organizing refresher courses on critical safety topics, such as electrical hazard prevention, fire safety, first aid, and the use of PPE.
  • Ensure training records are properly maintained and updated.

Compliance and Regulatory Monitoring:

  • Monitor compliance with local health and safety laws, including the OSHA Act, and ensure that safety measures are consistently followed.
  • Assist in ensuring that the company meets the requirements set by Kenya Power & Lighting Company (KPLC) and other relevant electrical industry regulatory bodies.
  • Help prepare for external inspections and audits, ensuring all documentation and safety practices are up to date.

Health and Safety Documentation:

  • Assist in maintaining and organizing health and safety records, including risk assessments, incident reports, safety audits, and training certificates.
  • Prepare safety reports and statistics for internal stakeholders and regulatory authorities.
  • Maintain an up-to-date inventory of safety equipment and ensure that all necessary safety tools are available and functional.

Emergency Response Planning:

  • Assist in the development, implementation, and regular review of emergency response plans, including evacuation plans, electrical accident responses, and first aid procedures.
  • Support the organization and coordination of emergency drills, ensuring that employees are familiar with emergency protocols.

General Support to Health and Safety Team:

  • Provide administrative support to the Health and Safety department, including scheduling meetings, preparing documents, and managing correspondence.
  • Support in maintaining an up-to-date inventory of PPE and other safety equipment, ensuring timely procurement and distribution.

Site Visits and Safety Inspections:

  • Conduct regular site visits to electrical work environments to ensure that safety standards and procedures are being adhered to.
  • Help identify potential hazards in the field and provide recommendations for improving safety practices.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • A minimum of Diploma, with a preference for a diploma or degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of electrical engineering safety protocols is a significant advantage.

Experience:

  • Previous experience in an administrative or safety-related role, ideally within an electrical engineering, construction, or industrial environment.
  • Familiarity with the safety challenges specific to electrical work, including working with high-voltage equipment, electrical circuits, and machinery.

Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of local health and safety regulations, including Kenya’s OSHA guidelines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Swahili.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and basic safety management software.
  • Ability to perform risk assessments and safety audits.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

Certifications:

  • NEBOSH Certification (Mandatory)
  • Degree in Environmental Science or any relevant course is highly desirable.
  • A valid certification in Occupational Health and Safety, such as OSHA 10-Hour or 30- Hour, is preferred.
  • First Aid/CPR certification is desirable.
  • Electrical safety training or awareness of electrical hazards is an advantage.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to conduct safety inspections at various job sites, including environments with electrical hazards.
  • Occasional lifting of safety equipment and materials.
  • Ability to work in both office and field settings, sometimes in challenging or noisy environments.
