An interesting position in a dynamic environment where you will be part of a brilliant underwriting team.  The role will cover responsibility for all size of consumer clients from SME facilities to multinational accounts, managing the establishment, implementation and evaluation of production and profitability goals. This position has direct accountability for the business results of Auto and Personal Property by ensuring profitability, penetration and/or volume within the country.  The role also Identifies and underwrites profitable accounts within underwriting limits; maintains and grows relationships with producers in conjunction with the Distribution team.

The role reports directly to the Managing Director

As the Head of Personal Insurance, your main responsibilities will be as follows:-

  1. Production
    1. Ensure that production growth targets are achieved and provide leadership to take remedial action to address shortfalls
  2. Accountability for Personal lines P&L
  3. Business Operations
    1. Establish / execute strategic business plans to achieve profitable growth in line with departmental targets
    2. Prepare, manage and execute production and expense budgets in line with departmental set budgets.
    3. Manage estimates and reporting processes and prepare ad hoc financial and management reports
    4. Manage and coordinate SLA’s with Customer Service Department to ensure operational efficiency and achievement of agreed customer service standards
    5. Assist Credit Control department with receivables
  4. Portfolio Management
    1. Ensure adherence to all underwriting guidelines.
    2. Manage the portfolio in profitable and sustainable growth, closely following claims activity trends
    3. Ensure adherence to all reporting requirements
    4. Ensure adherence to all control framework requirements
    5. Weekly reporting on key performance indicators for new and renewal business
  5. Technical Underwriting
    1. Review, analyze and underwrite new and renewal business within underwriting authority
    2. Provide technical direction to underwriters
    3. Negotiate terms and conditions with clients and brokers
    4. Handle referrals to regional office as appropriate
  6. Business Development and Retention
    1. Keep abreast of market changes and trends. Provide strategic direction for new business / new product development
    2. Seek opportunities to improve synergies and lead cross-sell initiatives with other profit centers
    3. Develop and maintain strong personal and professional relationships with clients
    4. Represent the company at industry bodies and professional associations and organizations
  7. Expense control
    1. Manage all expenses within budget. Continuously work to reduce the expense ratio through constant attention to efficiencies and opportunities to maximize productivity through streamlining of processes
  8. Performance Management
    1. Set employee objectives and manage performance to achieve business goals
    2. Ensure that appropriate training and development is provided to meet technical & regulatory requirements and encourage professional & personal growth
  9. Talent Management
    1. Work with HR to ensure that staff development plans are in place with feedback and follow-up
    2. Work with HR to manage succession planning to develop & retain talent and build bench strength

What we’re looking for:

Qualifications

  1. Tertiary qualification/Graduate level degree in Business/Economic/ Insurance or Marketing.
  2. Must have Insurance Technical qualifications CII/ACII/AIIK
  3. Marketing qualifications will be an advantage
  4. Proficiency in IT applications widely used for business

Experience & Knowledge: –

  1. 7 – 10 years relevant experience in General Insurance and at least 5 years in senior management role
  2. Experience in building relationships and influence with diverse cultures
  3. Strategic Business Planning

Skills & Competencies

  1. Excellent knowledge of consumer lines distribution channels
  2. In depth knowledge of the current business and marketing trends
  3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  4. Ability to analyze complex problems, interpret operational needs, and develop integrated creative solutions
