The Opportunity

The Country Director – Kenya will play a significant role in the leadership, development, launch, and growth of HTI’s program in Kenya. This position will develop and maintain governmental partnerships and will lead HTI’s staff, operations, and projects in furtherance of HTI’s model in Kenya. The position will support specialized units, conduct human trafficking assessments, and provide training and day-to-day mentorship to key government enforcement partners. The Country Director – Kenya will recruit, retain, and lead a specialized team of both Expatriates and Kenyan National Employees.

This position is based in Nairobi, Kenya and will require travel internationally (<5%) and in-country (<35%).

Expert Mentorship

  • Assist and provide enforcement expertise to Kenyan prosecutors and police on human trafficking, child exploitation, and related investigations and prosecutions.
  • Advise, support, and conduct legal research for the specialized human trafficking investigation and prosecution units/personnel.
  • Identify barriers to effective investigation, prosecution, and adjudication of human trafficking and related child exploitation cases in Kenya. Identify and execute strategies for overcoming those barriers.
  • Assist in preparing for and conducting human trafficking knowledge- and skills-based trainings for a variety of criminal justice stakeholders, namely police, prosecutors, and judicial officials.

Program Operations

  • Oversee the daily operations for HTI’s Kenya program and in-country teams, in communication and coordination with HTI HQ.
  • Execute on all programmatic project goals and KPIs, whilst ensuring financial compliance and overall management of HTI’s Kenya budget.
  • Recruit, train, develop, and lead a motivated and professional in-country team.
  • Ensure HTI operates within Kenyan laws and regulations and HTI’s values, standards, and policies.
  • Oversee security for HTI’s operations and in-country team.
  • Maintain and develop organized data reports and systems for monitoring and evaluation of all human trafficking and related cases throughout Kenya.

Cultivate Relationships

  • Communicate HTI’s vision and mission to government officials, practitioners, and other stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with law enforcement officers, prosecutors, and other relevant local and national government officials in Kenya.
  • Establish and maintain a positive public relations image.
  • Facilitate coordination between investigators, prosecutors, and victim service providers in human trafficking and related cases.
  • Represent HTI at various meetings and workshops in Kenya and the region, as required.

Donor Engagement

  • Work with HTI’s Leadership and Advancement Teams to maintain and expand donor relations and fundraising to provide resources to support HTI Kenya.

HTI Leadership

  • Attend meetings, retreats and other HTI events, as required.
  • Generate new and innovative ideas to advance HTI’s mission and model.
  • Complete additional assignments at the CEO’s and Leadership Team’s request.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor or equivalent required.
  • 8+ years of prosecutorial experience required; specialization in human trafficking/child exploitation or related prosecution highly preferred.
  • Experience training police and prosecutors on investigation and prosecution best practices related to human trafficking, crimes against children (online or otherwise), domestic violence, and related crimes preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience successfully leading multidisciplinary and/or high-performing teams to achieve ambitious objectives with excellent outcomes preferred.
  • Working with cross-cultural/international teams in challenging environments is preferred.
  • Advocacy and/or policy experience with key stakeholders, including governments, cultural and religious leaders, institutional donors, civil society organizations, and other partners, preferred
