The National Duka Owners Umbrella Organization (NDO) aims to unify and empower micro and small-scale retail businesses across Kenya. NDO enhances the capabilities of Duka owners through structured support in business management, access to finance, market linkages, and the utilization of technology. Our vision is to create a thriving network of profitable micro-retail shops that contribute significantly to Kenya’s economic development.

Position Description

The Business Counsellor and will play a key role in supporting NDO’s programs nationwide.

Reporting to the National Coordinator, the role entails providing advisory support to Duka owners, and ensuring the effective implementation of program activitie

Responsibilities

  • Conduct area mapping, mobilization, and recruitment of potential NDO members based on set criteria.
  • Provide business mentorship and advisory services to Duka owners, guiding them on financial management and growth strategies.
  • Deliver training and sensitization sessions in line with NDO’s program objectives.
  • Facilitate linkages between Duka owners and key ecosystem players, including financial institutions and suppliers.
  • Document lessons learned and success stories from membership drives and market linkage activities.

Monitoring & Reporting

  • Prepare weekly and monthly reports on program activities, including member engagement and impact assessment.
  • Participate in monitoring and evaluation activities, ensuring accurate data collection and reporting.
  • Identify and mitigate risks that may hinder the effective implementation of NDO’s activities.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Work closely with the National Coordinator to ensure program deliverables are met.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, donors, and partners.
  • Represent NDO in relevant forums and policy discussions to advocate for the micro-retail sector.

Minimum Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business or a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in business consulting, or working with micro-enterprises.
  • Strong understanding of Kenya’s retail industry trends and challenges.
  • Strong report writing.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in low-income communities and informal settlements.
  • Willingness to travel frequently within Kenya.
  • Training or facilitation experience is an added advantage.
