Description
YMSL is a financial services organization that models itself after the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh. We use a group-based lending methodology and work exclusively in rural and peri-urban Coastal Kenya. Yehu offers savings and a variety of loan products to its clients. Credit officers travel by foot, or on motorbike to meet weekly or bi-weekly with clients, 80% of whom are in the remote Coastal villages in Kenya.
Operations Officer
Responsibilities
- Provide leadership in business growth and development for branch teams to enable operating sustainable business units through operational efficiency, optimal revenue generations customer satisfaction and impartation of the mission and vision of Yehu.
Human Resource Management and Development
- Inculcates the necessary technical, leadership and behavioral competences and skills necessary to realize the performance culture that drives desires productivity for profitable business units for staff under jurisdiction
- Source of motivation for staff under jurisdiction through support, empowerment and accountability by applying best practices in performance management strategies and techniques.
- Champion of compliance practices for operating units under jurisdiction as a means of delivering standardized services to esteemed clients and other stakeholders.
Financial and Portfolio Management
- Operates profitable and sustainable operates units under jurisdiction
- Maintains desired portfolio growth and quality and per the prescribed performance indicators for business units under jurisdiction
Risk Management and Controls
- Identify, assess, and leverage internal controls and other actions to mitigate operational and financial risks in operational units (branches).
- Sustains compliance efforts risk and internal controls within the defines appetites for all operating units under jurisdiction.
- Inculcates to all unites under jurisdiction best practices in risk management and internal controls through various tools as sanctioned by management to create a pragmatic proactive risk management culture that supports business growth and sustainability within the mission and vision of the institution as well as the strategic goals and objectives.
Innovation and Change Management
- Inculcate the culture of innovation and best change management practices as a means of creating capabilities of optimizing opportunities and proactively mitigating threats for optimal and sustainable growth of operating units under jurisdiction.
- Drive process improvements to enhance efficiency and client service.
- Support the rollout of digital financial services and automation initiatives.
Public Relations and Stakeholder Management
- Provide leadership in building strong relationships with clients, partners, regulators, and community leaders.
- Represent the institution in community engagement, and other external forums as approved.
- Manage client feedback and ensure service standards are consistently met
Qualifications
- Financial skills -A strong understanding of financial concepts and principles, including financial statements, cash flow management, credit analysis, and risk assessment.
- Analytical Skills -The ability to analyze financial data, identify trends, and make data-driven decisions and to assess creditworthiness, evaluate financial performance, and identify potential risks.
- Mentorship skills-Strong leadership qualities to inspire and motivate teams, delegate tasks, provide guidance, and foster a positive work environment.
- Strategic Planning/Macro environmental analysis -setting strategic objectives, analyzing market trends, identifying growth opportunities, and developing strategies to expand operations.
- Risk Management- Identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks, implementing effective internal controls, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Effective Communication: able to cascade organizational goals, strategies, and expectations, as well as advocate for the needs of branch and staff to management and building strong relationships with clients, colleagues, and external stakeholders.
- Reporting and presentation skills and writing skills – Proficiently gathering relevant data, conducting insightful analyses, and effectively convey findings in clear, well-structured reports and presentations, to support informed decision-making, drive process improvements, and ensure efficient and transparent communication across the organization.

Academic & Professional Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Business Administration, Finance, Economics, or a related discipline.
- At least 5-7 years of progressive experience in microfinance, banking, or financial services, with a focus on operations, branch management, or a similar role.
- Prior experience in managing teams, including supervising branch managers or similar roles.
- Experience in strategic planning, business development, and portfolio management.
