Description

KyU is located approximately 115 Km North East of Nairobi on Sagana – Embu – Highway. It is the successor to Kirinyaga Technical Institute which was conceived by the people of Kirinyaga way back in 1971 when the former head of state His Excellency the President, Hon. Daniel Arap Moi C.G.H., M.P. (then Vice-president) launched the Harambee Fund Raising Drive at the request of Kirinyaga people. Kirinyaga County Council set aside 200 acres of land for the institute at Kutus and 50 more acres were also acquired at Kangaita area on the slopes of Mt. Kenya. The Institute opened doors to the first students on 2nd March 1977 when 72 students were enrolled, 48 of these students were admitted in the building and construction department while the remaining 24 were enrolled in the clothing and textile technology department. New training programmes were introduced in plumbing and Electrical installation in the early and mid-eighties respectively. Kirinyaga University College the predecessor to KyU was established as a constituent college of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and technology (JKUAT) through a Legal Order No. 108 of August 2011. KyUC admitted its first student in September 2012 in two Bachelors’ degree programmes and grew tremendously in student and staff population with commensurate facilities to host 13 degree programmes.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Carry out weeding, land preparation, attending to nurseries and transplanting in the tea farm to prevent nutrient competition of the desired crop and weeds hence less use of inputs.
  2. Carry out proper tea pruning to ensure maximum production of yields and maintain required canopy to avoid build–up of pests and diseases
  3. Apply fertilizers and agrochemicals on the required portions of the tea farm to meet the plant nutrient requirement.
  4. Prepare land through tillage to ensure timely replanting of dry tea bushes
  5. Undertake crop husbandry through attending to nurseries, planting, weeding, trimming of foot paths, application of fertilizers and spraying of crops to ensure that crops thrive for optimal crop growth and high yields.
  6. Tea leaf collection and weighing duties at the tea buying centre.

Requirements

  • Have KCSE certificate D plain and above.
  • Must possess Certificate in Agriculture or equivalent course undertaken for at least six (6) months.
  • Be medically fit, able to work in upper tea zone.
  • Experience in Tea husbandry practices of not less than 3 years.
  • Able to work for long hours with minimum supervision.

  1. Successful candidates will be offered a competitive remuneration package.
  2. Employment will be on Permanent and Pensionable terms except for Tutorial Fellows.
  3. Those with degrees from foreign universities should attach certificates of equation and recognition of qualifications from Kenya National Qualifications Authority.
